The Optometrist plays an important role in the prevention of blindness. As per WCO (World council of Optometry), Optometrists are primary health care practitioners of the eye and vision system who can successfully manage the world leading causes of blindness (i.e. refractive error). Not only manage the refractive error, they can detect the other eye serious eye diseases like cataract, glaucoma, retinal disease, hypertension, and diabetes etc and refer them to an Ophthalmologist for further management. An optometrist can manage vision therapy; prescribe independently spectacle and contact lenses in India but optometrist of United States (In certain states) are allowed to medically manage the conditions like glaucoma, retinal disease, foreign body removal and certain types of LASIK surgeries. Also, an Optometrist can collaborate with an Ophthalmologist for providing pre and post operative care to an eye surgery patient. India is the world second largest population in the world and 23% of world blind people are from India. As per a report of 2012, India needs 115,000 optometrists but present near about 9000-degree optometrists and 36000 diploma optometrists. So demand of optometrist is high in India.

Optometry Educational Qualification:- Diploma in Optometry: course and- Diploma in Optometry (D.opt) is a two-course and minimum requirement is Higher secondary with physics, chemistry, and biology. OCI (Optometry Council of India) planned to all diploma degree optometrist must be upgraded themselves to degree optometrist by 2020. Here the list of Optometry colleges mentioned by ASCO. Bachelor of Optometry: – It also called B.optom. It is a four-year degree course including 3 years theory and a one-year internship. The qualification requirement of this course is as same as diploma course. Currently, there are 47 Optometry colleges running bachelor of optometry course in INDIA as per ASCO listed. M.phil & Masters in Optometry: – After graduation higher study aspirants can do M.phil in Optometry or M.opt (Masters in Optometry). In India, only Elite School of Optometry (ESO) offers M.phil in Optometry collaborating with Sankara Netralaya (Chennai) and affiliated by Bits Pilani. Most of the M.opt colleges offer both regular and part-time courses because both modalities of degree are equally demanded. P.hd: – Most of the students pursue P.hd degree from outside of India, especially in Australia and Canada. Amity University and Manipal university started P.hd recently. Outside of India, Indian optometrists are highly demanded at Gulf countries and salary is around 12L per annum for a 2-3years experience optometrist.
